The Apicoectomy Procedure in Costa Rica
An apicoectomy is a minor dental surgical procedure that removes the tiny tip of a tooth’s root. Once the tiny root end has been removed, the root end cavity that remains is prepared and filled with a biocompatible material.

Goodness Dental specializes in many complex treatments with a fully bi-lingual clinical team. Our specialists have trained in the USA, Canada, Europe and South America.
Who needs an apicoectomy?
You may need to undergo an apicoectomy or root end surgery if an infection is developing or continues to develop on the root of your tooth even after a root canal surgery. This procedure is usually recommended when your tooth cannot be saved through conventional root canal treatment.
The only alternative to apicoectomy is usually the removal of a tooth, which may negatively affects the surrounding healthy teeth. In these cases, an apicoectomy is preferred to preserve the function of the natural teeth.
What happens during an apicoectomy procedure?
Your dentist will first administer a local anesthesia to help make you feel comfortable. As the dentist progresses with the procedure, an incision is made into the gum near the affected tooth to help expose and remove any swollen or infected tissue. The endodontist will then finally remove the tip of the affected tooth’s root. A few stitches will help close the gum tissue. The bone near the end of the root should heal fully in a matter of 2-4 months.
What is the recovery period after the procedure?
You should be able to return to your normal activities the day after your procedure. You should however expect to experience some minor discomfort and swelling as healing continues. It is advisable to follow the postoperative instructions which include a limited diet as well as brushing instructions provided by the endodontist.
If you experience any pain following the procedure, please advise your endodontist immediately. The entire dental team at Goodness Dental is here to help you get the best possible dental care during your visit to Costa Rica.
